Quick Summary

Singapore and Australia locations are getting new AMD EPYC 4585PX processors, 256GB DDR5 RAM, 4TB storage, and double the network bandwidth.

Why We're Doing This

We're upgrading our Singapore and Australia infrastructure to newer hardware. The AMD EPYC 4585PX processors offer better single-core performance, which matters for game servers, especially Minecraft. We're also moving to DDR5 RAM and increasing network capacity.

These upgrades should improve your server's performance. How much depends on what you're running, but the better single-core speeds and DDR5 memory will help.

What's New

Here's what we're rolling out:

  • AMD EPYC 4585PX Processors: Similar to the Ryzen 9950X but in server form. Single-core performance is considerably better than our previous hardware. Minecraft server hosting and other single-threaded games will benefit from this.
  • 256GB DDR5 RAM: Moving from DDR4 to DDR5. Lower latency and higher bandwidth than the previous generation.
  • 4TB NVMe Storage: Fast NVMe drives for chunk loading and world saves.
  • Double the Network Bandwidth: Doubling the uplink capacity on these machines.

What This Means for Your Server

If you're running a server in Singapore or Australia, you'll be moved to the new hardware. The improved single-core performance should help with tick rates, especially for Minecraft. DDR5 memory has lower latency than DDR4. The increased network bandwidth gives more headroom for player connections and heavy data transfers.

How noticeable this is will vary depending on your server setup and what you're running.

Will This Cost More?

No. Pricing stays the same.

About Single-Core Performance

Minecraft servers are primarily single-threaded. Most calculations-ticking blocks, processing entities, running the game loop-happen on one core. Having many cores doesn't help much if each core is slow.

The EPYC 4585PX has strong single-thread performance, similar to high-end desktop CPUs. This is what matters for Minecraft and other single-threaded game servers.

About DDR5

DDR5 has higher bandwidth and lower latency compared to DDR4. For game servers, this means faster data access when loading chunks, handling plugins, or processing player actions.

It's not a dramatic difference on its own, but it adds up alongside the CPU upgrade.

What About Other Locations?

This upgrade is specific to Singapore and Australia. Our other locations run AMD Ryzen 9 9900X/9950X processors in Belgium (see our Belgium infrastructure upgrade) and Ryzen 7950X in the US. These are performing well and don't need immediate upgrades.

Bottom Line

Singapore and Australia are getting upgraded to AMD EPYC 4585PX processors, DDR5 RAM, 4TB NVMe storage, and doubled network bandwidth. The improved single-core performance should help with server performance, particularly for Minecraft.

Migrations will happen over the coming weeks. We'll notify you before moving your server.

Frequently Asked Questions

What CPU does Falix use for game servers?

Falix uses AMD EPYC 4585PX processors in Singapore and Australia, and AMD Ryzen 9 9900X/9950X processors in Belgium. These offer excellent single-core performance, which is critical for Minecraft and other single-threaded game servers.

Does DDR5 RAM improve Minecraft server performance?

DDR5 provides higher bandwidth and lower latency compared to DDR4. While the improvement is incremental on its own, it adds up alongside CPU upgrades, resulting in faster chunk loading and smoother player interactions.

Will the hardware upgrade cost me more?

No. Pricing stays the same. You benefit from improved performance at no additional cost.

Why does single-core performance matter for Minecraft servers?

Minecraft servers are primarily single-threaded, meaning most calculations happen on one CPU core. A processor with high single-core speed handles ticking blocks, processing entities, and running the game loop more efficiently than one with many slower cores.
